Sir,
Your son here is desirous I should write you my opinion of his Health and the likelihood of this place agreeing with him
He has been calling upon me occasionally since the 1st June in consequence of a feeling of debility, and the treatment I have adopted in his Case has I think been of some service to him.
He has no positive disease that I can discover, but is affected with a weakness of the Heart itself and which I think he must have

laboured under since a Boy.
The Climate of San Francisco is I think better calculated for his gaining strength in than almost any part of England; and is certainly very preferable to London – He requires a great amount of nourishment and with steady occupation, that is not too laborious will gain strength yearly
As he has no particular tie to this place, should I observe any alteration in him that a change would be likely to improve, depend upon it I will not fail to advise hime for his benefit, but I think you have no cause to be uneasy

My Dear Father
According to promise I write Just one Month later, and as I know you are anxious to hear if My health has improved, I will at once relive [relieve] your Mind by Stating how I have progressed during the last four weeks.
Dr Montague who I occasionally see has advised me to take steel wine for the next three Months he is confident that I cannot take anything better, also that I am going on very well, and I feel much stronger. From all I can learn there is a deficiency of Iron in the blood which causes a weak circulation, the Heart not having sufficiently strong to send the blood with the required force to the extremities; thereby causing at times a coldness of the lower extremities. The above wine is calculated to infuse into the blood the proper amount of Iron – this Tonic I Manufacture – here are the directions. If you or Emily like to try a little. Get 3 ozs. [ounces] of Steel filings, 3 pints of light wine, spread the filings on a dish, and keep them damp with a little of the wine for three days, that they may get rusty, at the end of that time, put the filings into a bottle with the remainder of the wine, cork it, and shake the same every day for ten days, it will thus be ready for use – Take about half a
