San Francisco May 10th 1854 --

Dear Mother,

How happy I am to hear you say
that you think I am trying to conduct myself
as I ought, and "judging from my letters, you fina-
ly believe, that I am again, your dutiful, and
truthful Son, Henry Parker" Would that I had
never given you cause to believe me otherwise,
but as I have often done so, my only course now
is to put in practice the good resolutions which
I have lately formed as, by so doing I hope to
win back the good name I once bore -- but if I do
not succeed in doing so, or if I did not expect
to do so, your kind approval and excellent advice
would be a sufficient encouragement, and ample
reward, to justify a continuance in well-doing
so rest assured that I shall endeavor to do my
best to conduct in an honorable manner, and
if it be in my power to prevail it, you shall
never again have cause to look upon me as one
deserving to be called an outcast from the family
friends, and circle, but on the other hand, I
hope to merit a continuance of your love and
kindness, which you have ever bountifully
bestowed upon me, at all times --
