where there is no Artificial means for obtaining
water the Miners have not been able to get much
gold and the few that had a little money ahead
and had in the hands of bankers lost it all
in the General Crash a couple of months ago.
they say in the cities it was distressing to
see the poor people flocking around the banking
houses to try if there was the least hope of
obtaining even a small part of their money.
a great many were labourers [laborers] that almoss [almost]
denied themselves the nessesaries [necessities] of life
for the sake of saving a hundred dollars to
send to their poor families in the states
and poor Widdows [widows] that Earned a few hundred
dollars at washing and other drudgery and
put it in these bankers hands for safe
keeping for themselves and children but
there was no respect for persons they all
had to go home with heavy hearts their money
was gone. They had not a cent in the world if
they dared to give utterance to their griefs
they were waited on by the police to prevent
a disturbance. This has been the state of affairs
here this Winter [winter] and many a man has went
hungry to bed on account of it but for all
this California is a better place for a poor
family than the older countries if some
of the poor and industrous [industrious] girls in Albany
