Irreverence, inattention. Parents speak
to their children twice or thrice, without securing
their attention. There is irreverence for parental
authority. In the school room the teacher is com-
pelled to speak to [two] or three times. Defective home gov-
ernment is exhibited at school.

Let parents exact immediate obedience to their orders, at
home. and teachers require prompt attention to the rules
of the school room and the directions of the teacher.

The present methods of teaching in the present day dif-
fer greatly from that those pursued 40 years ago.

The Graded system now generally adopted in the common schools is
an improvement upon the old modes. It is econom-
ical in respect of time, and more efficient in its re-
sults. True, in higher institutions methods were
systematic and thorough: but only a few were able
to secure obtain the academic or collegiate course.

In consequence of the improvements in the
methods of teaching, and of the adoption of the
graded system, our high schools afford almost as
complete a course of instruction as did the col-
leges 40 years ago.

The child who enters the lower grade at six yrs.
passes, in regular succession through the Primary,
Intermediate, Grammar and High school, and hav-
ing mastered the branches taught therein, wins
a graduation Diploma, is a trained systemat-
ic scholar qualified in the studies embraced in
the grades course successively passed traversed. Worthy of the
