My dear old Sned:

Just a few lines to let you know
that Sergeant Erbs of the Marine Corps, telephoned
Mother this a.m. that the last Army & Navy
Journal gives Normans promotion to Major.

I was going to cable Nor, but the Censor
Officer told me he thought that Nor already
knew it, as the Govt usually cabled the
Officer direct, so I did not cable.

No word from any of the absent ones. Jos
says the rain did not damage the rice, and
they have shut off the irrigating, to dry the
ground so that the harvesting machines
can go on.

There is to be a base or foot
ball game tomorrow between the Marines
and some one else, and I suppose we will
have to go.

I went on a drive with the
S.F. Court Clerk through the Oakland Manufacturing
Districts last Wednesday, and we wound up
at U.C. and saw retreat with 800 Aviation
Cadets in line. President Wheeler gave us
a talk, and said that the University was now
primarily a war college. Barracks to hold
4000 men are being built on the Western
portion of the grounds, and that number of enlisted
students will be in them on Oct 1st. There are
