My dear old Sned:

Yesterday morning (Sunday) just as we were starting
for Calaveras, your telegram arrived that you had
received your commission the night before and that
you were with Lesley at the Grand Hotel. We stopped
at the Western Union office but found they were closed
at 10 AM. On our return they were closed at 6 pm, so
we had to telephone a telegram in to the Oakland office.
They were so busy that they were unable to take the
message until after 9, so I sent it to Camp Kearny
though we wanted to send it day letter to the U. S. Grant.

I got your letter of Friday this morning acknowleging [acknowledging]
receipt of the $20.00, and of your long letter of last Wed.
which we were all very glad to get, and to know of
the testimonials of Gen. Hall & Capt. Welsh. I hope
if you want to get into the regulars you get your desire.

Be sure and let me know if you need any
money for your new equipment as a Lieut, and
I will send it to you. I got a bill for dentistry
today from Dr. Knowles for you. $27.00. I don't
know what he did but I think his bills very high.

rider is attached to the policy and thereby
becomes a part of the policy. These riders are
the forms of this Bureau. Some states have
