Dearest E

I forgot to send you the letter of
Dicks yesterday – It is a splendid
one, and I am proud of the generous
spirit in which he takes his
disappointment – It is the right way
but not always easy – However she
did the right thing herself in writing
him in advance – so he evidently
does not feel that he has any thing to
complain of – & it is very much nicer
that it is [double underlined] so – He is a dear old fellow
& my heart aches for his loneliness & his
disappointment – Fondest love dear

Your loving Mother

R. H. Bates

[written vertically on left side and top center:]
Hope you can return to Les what you borrowed. If you need more call
on us.
Les
may [underlined]
need
his.
