Had a three o'clock convoi
from Brain to about three
kilos below Vailly toward
Soupir. While eating dinner
at Vailly we saw a French
plain [plane] brought down by
German shrapnel. The
shell burst right on the plane
and it immediately plunged
to earth. -- It was a bitter
cold night and the rain
pored [poured] down, blowing in
our faces. Very dark and
hard to follow the road.
