The 44th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry (Confederate) was originally organized as the 1st Battalion, Mississippi Infantry (Blythe’s) in the summer of 1861 under the command of Lt. Col. Andrew K. Blythe. It served in the Western Theater under Cheatham's, Chalmer’s, Tucker’s, and Sharp's brigades. It was redesignated as the 44th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry by an order of the War Department dated June 6, 1863. It was later commanded by Cols. Jacob H. Sharp, James Barr, and Lt. Col. Sims.
