Description
Joseph Warren Miller was a Union officer from Illinois who served as an assistant adjutant general in the United States occupation forces in Mississippi after the Civil War.
Born around 1839 in Eaton, Ohio, Miller volunteered to fight for the Union during the Civil War. Originally with the Forty-Fifth Illinois Infantry Regiment, he mustered out of service for a promotion to captain and service as an assistant adjutant general (an administrative position) within the Union army. He served in occupation duty in Mississippi from 1864 to 1866, frequently publishing reports and orders from commanding generals. Miller mustered out of military service in April 1866 and returned north.
