The 5th Regiment, United States Colored Heavy Artillery (Union) was organized as the 1st Regiment, Mississippi Heavy Artillery (African Descent) on September 26, 1863 in Warren County, Mississippi under the command of Col. Hermann Lieb and served in the Western Theater. It was re-designated as the 4th Regiment, United States Colored Heavy Artillery on March 11, 1864 and later as the 5th Regiment, United States Colored Heavy Artillery on April 26, 1864.
