Description

Plantation overseers were responsible for managing the enslaved labor force on a plantation in accordance with planters' orders, including supervising daily operations and disciplining enslaved people. Overseers lived apart from planters' households, and typically lived near slave quarters. (Library of Congress; National Park Service)
