Your Excellency

Will confer a favour upon us, by informing us, whether the State of Missi. still in forces a Tax of Two Dollars pr. Bale upon all the Cotton shipped from here. There seems to be an opinion prevaling here that the State does not require this Tax, & a petty Agent & Dpty Shff. still requires us to pay it here.

Your answer will oblige Your Excellencys Most obt. servants

Letter of -

Inquiring whether the $2.00 Tax on cotton shipped beyond the limits of the State, is still collectable.

Ansd. with information that the tax was due upon all cotton grown prior to Oct. 1865. And that a tax of $1. per bale on the present growing crop will be due in May 1867
