West Point Miss April 7th 1876

His Excellency J. M. Stone Jackson Miss

Dr. Col. A petition has been forwarded you soliciting the appointment of Mr. JM Arnold of the Columbus bar to the Judges seat of this Judicial District.

He is a lawyer of prominent standing a true Democrat and his war record as a Confederate soldier is beyond reproach, an affable gentleman in his appointment as Circuit Judge for this district would meet with hearty approbation of the members of the Bar and of the private citizens of this district.

Soliciting the reappointment of the present incumbent Judge J. A. Orr universally and almost unanimously signed by the Bar & citizens at the time these petitions were made & signed, he was then the choice of the two aspirants[?] regardless of his politics and war record you are familiar with both and perfectly familiar with his associationm with the late officeholders and Radical party.

I write from here being about the only citizen of this place personally acquainted with you knowing your aversion and discussed of a radical and "Go ahead boys I will see all right at home," I think, and almost know you, will place this circuit Judicial Ermine on the shoulders of a true Democrat and true soldier and such an one is Mr. J.M. Arnold earnestly soliciting his appointment and knowing full well it will meet
