Washington Hotel April 18/61—

His Excellency
Jno J Pettus
Govr &c—

Dr. Sir,

On the River we are comparatively unprotected, and there are now engaged in working the Leeves in Washington County about 1000, able-bodied Irishmen good material for soldiers. Most of these men express a willingness to fight for the South, and if any arrangements can be made by which they could be mustered in active service I have no doubt they would make efficient soldiers.—

As this is a matter of some im-portance to us, I would be pleased to hear from you on the subject—A re-cruiting officer would do well in our County—

Very Respectfully
yours &c—
