Title: Letter from Catherine Merrill to May Wright Sewall.
Description: I am relieved to hear of Mr. Sewall's recovery. I received your note inviting me to the opera house and to a seat on the platform. I was prevented by unexpected company from acceptance of more than the invitation to the hall. Indeed I was late. The room is large and the roaring and frying in my head has blunted my hearing - other people heard. With kindest regards to Mr. Sewall. Catharine Merrill (1824-1900), Indianapolis, educator and Civil War nurse. Daughter of Samuel Merrill, founder of the Bobbs-Merrill publishing company. She taught at Northwestern Christian University (which later became Butler University), becoming only the second woman in the United States to be appointed as a full professor. She was a member of the Indianapolis Woman's Club and the Contemporary Club. The Catharine Merrill Club was founded in her honor.
