Title: Letter from Helena Modjeska to May Wright Sewall.
Description: I accept with pleasure your invitation to deliver an address on "Woman on the Stage" before the Congress. I wish that the delegates to our sections may be real representatives of the Dramatic Art. I suggest several names for the selection of the committee - (Herewith follow 10 names, including Julia Marlowe.) Helena Modjeska (1840-1909), Polish-American actress. Due to political reasons, she and her husband, a member of the Polish aristocracy, were obliged to leave Poland in 1886. Along with a small number of friends, they emigrated to California and attempted to start an agricultural colony, which failed due to drought and the depression of 1887. She quickly learned English and made her American stage debut in San Francisco in 1877. She excelled in serious dramatic roles and continued a successful career for the next 30 years. Modjeska Peak and Modjeska Canyon in California are named for her.
