Description: I had promised to send you a picture of Lady Macbeth. The photographer destroyed the negative - I'm having more taken. As to the meeting in Washington - I will be there if my schedule permits. Helena Modjeska (1840-1909), Polish-American actress. Due to political reasons, she and her husband, a member of the Polish aristocracy, were obliged to leave Poland in 1886. Along with a small number of friends, they emigrated to California and attempted to start an agricultural colony, which failed due to drought and the depression of 1887. She quickly learned English and made her American stage debut in San Francisco in 1877. She excelled in serious dramatic roles and continued a successful career for the next 30 years.
