18 [206] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1792, 1792, August, 5, [SUNDAY] C.Taylor came here to breakfast- I went with him to Coleman's Springs- His wife & two children there. Col Madison, Mrs Madison & Wm Madison ((F.M's son) H.Chew, S.Daingerfield & Nancy Willis, Maj'r Madison's family, Mr.T.Bell- and sundry transient persons were at the Springs. Whilst I was there, which was from the 5th to the 15th inclusive- some of the persons were-Maj'r Madison, Miss Fanny Madison, J.Taylor jr, Geo Shepherd &c &c- I did not perceive the Springs were of much benefit, my stay being short and I was not so well when I went as common- I paid for Board for myself 10 days- feed and pasturing my mare 28/9- Liquor 3/9, Gave Geo Brooks 6/- other expences 1/6-about 40/- in the whole. G.C.Taylor wrote that he was very unwell and desired C.Taylor would go & see him at Castle hill which C Taylor did & his family came up the 10th- Last week the field of Corn next to the house was sown with wheat, the Overseer says 10 1/2 Bushels- 15, I came from the Springs- got home at 10 o'clock- Found my father had received a bad wound on his leg by the kick of a horse last Sunday- J.Taylor, J.Taylor jr, Reu Taylor & J.Pendleton dined here, in evening I went with them to Court house. C.Taylor ret'd in the evening from his second visit to G.C.Taylor who he left somewhat mending. 16, Went to Court house where a sermon was preached by Benj'a Grigsby, from Rockbridge, a young man of promising parts- of Presbyrterian persuasion. J.Taylor was here in the morning and asked my father to dine with him, which he did. I came from Sermon to J.Taylor's- J.Pendleton & family, T.Barbour's family, Miss Joanna Pendleton, Mrs James, Mrs Bickers, were there. A pedler with a cart came there in evening & sold goods of some of those present- Reu Taylor, his wife & C.Taylor also dined there. 17, My father sent Jack with two horses to Mr.Bell's and he is to work in the place of Mr.Bell's Bob till his return from Doct'r Walker's. He is with the Carriage and horses being lent to go for G.C.Taylor. J.Taylor jr went up with the Carriage. C.Taylor came here and I went with him to C't house, Barbour, Webb & Madison & the Arbitrators met on that business but did not come to a conclusion of it. My father complained his leg had pained him much to day. 18, C.Taylor came over to Breakfast & dressed my father's leg- I rode to Mr.Shepherd's & got the favour of Mr.J.Blair to take my watch with him to get it regulated by Walker who lately had her to repair- I staid but little & ret'd home. Uncle Taylor and Ch's Taylor came here- About 2 o'clock G.C.Taylor arrived with J.Taylor jr, who went to attend him from Doct'r Walker's. 19, C.Taylor was here morning & evening & dressed my father's leg- J.Taylor and Reu Taylor dined here. T.Barbour jr walked here in the evening to borrow certificates of me but I declined parting with them. -[SUNDAY]- 20, C.Taylor was here morning & eve'ng. J.Taylor jun'r walked here after breakfast & ret'd before dinner- Cloudy, thunder with a sprinkle of rain- 21, Rained a little in last night, cloudy morning. J.Taylor & C.Taylor were here after breakfast but staid only a little time- 22, [No entry- S.H.A.] 23, Mr.T.Bell dined here- a few drops of rain to day. R.Alcock jr came here & got a certificate from my father about his brandy made last year- 24, Smart shower of rain last night, and a good shower in the evening. 25, Cool morning- J.Taylor sent some apples here and had them beaten &c made about 20 Gallons Cyder, he was here till after Breakfast. I went with J.Pendleton & J.Taylor jr (who came by) to a shooting match at Cook's at Gum Spring. My father's Leather taken up from Tanning- 26, Very cool morning and clear day. J.Taylor was here in the evening- Jas Bell and John Taylor (z.Taylor's son) dined here- C.Taylor called here and went to Mr W.Belle's, who sent for him to visit him being sick- C.Taylor called about Sun set on his return home.
