3 [225] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1794. 1794, January, 27, Hazy and cool. I went to Court, did not collect any money- I bought sundries for E[lizabeth] Chew at Usher & Smith's to the amount of £1.19.4. The Doubloon Col Madison let me have for E.Chew weighed only £4.11.3. which is 6d less than marked on it- I paid it to T.Jenkins. 28, Hazy with thin clouds- I went to Called Court on Charles, (Alex Shepherd's) who was condemned for the murder of Bell's Reuben. I rec'd 20/- the balance due of T. [or Z.] Nooe for bacon. Paid 8.- at Barbours store for 2 Gal's Whiskey had the 13th. Eliza & children were removed in T.Barbour's Waggon to the Store at Court house. Lent C.Taylor 3 1/2 lb. Tow thread for filling. I have been much pained in my side & back to day, and griped- something relieved now, at night. 29, Began to Snow before day and continued with sleet and cold North wind till night- I am better than was yesterday, staid at home. 30, Cleared before day- the snow 9 or 10 inches deep. M.Biggers informed me that a straw stack last night fell on their large white sow & killed her. She had then 9 pigs. M.Biggers went to look for the Outlying hogs, but did not find them. 31, The weather clear and cool- M.Biggers informed me that the Red Sow had lost or eaten her pigs & advised to fatten her & that hw ould take the meat for part I agreed to let him have- M.Biggers went again in search of the Hogs and found them at Capt Herndon's, he had killed two yesterday & two this day & got a Sow & four pigs alive- Which I believe were all that were lost belonging to G.Taylor's estate- Intend to send for them tomorrow morning. -Killed the Sow above mentioned the 26th Feb'y when she weighed 185 lb Nett & Macon Biggers had it for part I was to find him. February, 1, Clear and cool. I went to Court house, got my keg filled with Apple brandy. 7 3/4 Gallons at Barbour's Store & paid L.Throckmorton 31/- I sent Macon Biggers, Peter & Jack with the Cart & Oxen to Capt Herndon's and had the Hogs killed &c belonging to G.Taylor's estate, brought home, weighed them & had them cut up & salted- They weighed 139, 101, 98, 94, making total 432 lb Nett- Badly cleaned & appeared as if they had been in a fatter state- Also 1 sow & 4 pigs alive. I waited at the Court house for the Cart till Frank came to tell me it had returned by the Church. Mr.Shepherd insisted upon it & I dined with him- Wm. Bell was there. 2, Clear and cool- hazy evening. C.Taylor sent me 6 1/2 lb Sugar for honey formerly and to invite me to dine there- I went over, James Taylor, John Pendleton, William Madison, Jas Bell & G.C.Taylor dined there. --[SUNDAY]-- 3, I Lent my gun to J.Taylor jr to go in pursuit of Wolves- Sent a jug of honey to J.Pendleton's wife, Some Peas &c for her & sister, went to J.Taylor's, J.Pendleton & family, T.Barbour's family & W.W4lker, D.S. dined there. Hazy day, cloudy evening & mild. Had the lrge Sow put to fatten for M.B. Weighed the leaf fat of the Hogs before tried up, there was 18 lb., 6 kidneys included. 4, Appears to have been a very little rain last night- Thawed considerably to day- I staid at home- J.Taylor jun'r brought my gun in the evening- Says he is doubtful about there being any wolves in the neighborhood- 5, Fine weather but not so great thaw as yesterday. J.Taylor, J.Pendleton, J.Taylor jr & C. Taylor dined here. G.Taylor was sent for & after dinner went home to go to Capt Conway's- J.Taylor paid me 20 dollars, also £4.10.0 which I paid J.Taylor jr for Wm.Taylor & he let his father have to pay me. I credit J.Taylor £10.10.0 & Charge William Taylor to G.T's Estate £4.10.0 6, Thin Clouds- about noon fine snow. Henry Day's wife & daughter came here to breakfast. I let her have 5 Quarts honey & charged to H.Day. James Vaughn was here- I gave him Onion & Tob'o seeds, he says the hogs brought home were 4 miles from Z.H's, he killed them & assisted to carry them there. 7, There fell but little snow, not an inch deep, small rain in the night, foggy morning, clear fine evening & warm. J.Taylor sent Grandison to ask me dine there I went, J.Pendleton & family, T.Barbour & do, C.Taylor & G.C.Taylor were there J.Taylor was gone to John Daniel's J.Pendleton & family intend returning home tomorrow.
