2 [224] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1794, 1794, January, 14, Clear and windy-cold- the ground covered with thin ice. W.Taylor went after breakfast to the place w'ch he sold to E.Langham & returned to dinner- He had brought in two Carts, a Desk & Book case, 1 Looking Glass & 1 round Table, which he formerly sold Maj'r Langham & had lately bought of him again-and desired me to keep possession of till he wants them. He went away in the evening 15, C.Taylor sent a boy to ask me to dine with him- I went over. J.Taylor, J.Taylor jr, J.Pendleton, H.Pendleton, W.Dade-Nancy & Peggy Bell, were there- G.Taylor went before dinner to see Tho's Barbour jr who is unwell. 16, A boy from J.Taylor's informed me He & gentlemen from there were going to Mr.T.Bell's- I went with J. & H.Pendleton & J.Taylor jr. when we got to Mr.Bell's he & his wife were ready to go to Col.Burnley's, we then went to Maj'r Moore's who being from home & Mrs Bailey The young ladies & Robert Moore were gone to J.Taylor's- we returned & I went to J.Taylor's to dinner. Heard that T.Barbour jr was better. 17, Great white frost- smoky & thin clouds- a little rain in the evening and night I went to J.Taylor's- the same company there as were yesterday- also Reu Taylor with the ladies to Maj'r Moore's in the evening. T.Barbour jr came to J.T's in evening- complains of being still unwell but much relieved. 18, Thick cloudy day with small rain, warm- J.Pendleton called on me & I went to Maj'r Moore's. Mrs Throckmorton, Mrs Baily, Miss Fanny Barbour, H.Pendleton & J.Taylor jr were there, the two last returned with us in the evening. very miry. 19, [SUNDAY] Cleared early last night- very white frost and mild day- Bees flew out in great numbers. I went to J.Taylor's- John & Harry Pendleton went to Culpeper- T.Barbour jr & family & J.Pendleton's family there- I engaged T.Barbour to engage four small hogs, of one Rice, for me- T.B. paid me 3/4 the balance of a small account. 20, Fine, moderate day, heard frogs- Tommy Bell came here at playtime & got some Mountain cresses seed for Mrs Daniel. Billy Taylor was with him. I had joints and midlings hung up to smoke for Bacon- 16 Gammons, 16 Shoulders & 16 Midlings the Jowls &c hung up the 11th instant. 21, Cloudy with some rain last night. Warm to day with clouds & a little rain- Heard frogs. A called court was summoned to try Charles, a Slave of Alex'r Shepherd's but the trial defered- I went to Court house about noon- Had taken a purge of Castor oil in morning being unwell- Col.James Madison sen'r put a Doubloon weighs only 17 pw. 9 G. or 4.11.3. A Porter gave me verbal orders to Cr.J.Taylor 20/- which I have done & charged it to him- I pd. F.Moore jr, 1/10 w'ch he said he had paid more then he owed. 22, Warm foggy morning- cleared very fine- Began to Thunder with clouds afternoon- a little rain and in the evening wind to North. I took about 20 rains Ipecac'a. John Leathers brought a note from G.C.Taylor that he would settle £3.7.0 for him- The debt was due from Leathers to Mrs.James, who told me receive it- 23. Remarkably windy all last night, windy & clear to day, cool but not sharp. 25, Pleasant day. Uncle Taylor, J.Taylor, C.Taylor, Reuben Taylor, G.C.Taylor, J.Taylor jr, John Pendleton, Major Moore & C.P.Howard dined there. 6, [SUNDAY] Clouded early last night- and began to snow about 5 o'clock this morning and fell very fast till 2 Inches deep, cloudy the rest of the day I went to C.Taylor's, gave him a copy Miss M.Conway's acco't with G.T. dec'd.
