Classics. The three ladies who had just completed
their medical course were also laureated, and received
the degree of M.D. Mrs McGillivray carrying off
the Carruthers Chemistry Gold Medal.

The inportance of the action taken
both by Queen's and Victoria in throwing their doors
open to women had not been underestimated by the
public and the success of the first women who
availed themselves of the privileges offered was felt
to be the best vindication of this step in the Higher
Education of Women.

At this Convocation portraits
were presented to the College of the Ex-Principals
Snodgrass and Cook, on behalf of Graduates of the
University who had been students during the Principalship
of each. This was a fitting tribute to men
whose exertions for the good of the University had
been so untiring and of such permanent benefit.

Dr. Cook had been connected with Queen's since
its foundation. It was he who conducted the negotiations
in London England, by which Queen's
acquired her Royal Charter, and when the new
Constitution was formed in 1875, he was elected
the first Chancellor. Dr Snodgrass's exertions
in conjunction with Professor Mackerras,
had turned the scale at a time
