Memorandum:

It appears from the Press dispatches that John R. Shillady, of New York,
Secretary of the National Association for the advancement of the colored people
went to Austin Texas last week in the interests of securing a State Charter for
the Organization; that on August 22, 1913, after holding a meeting with colored
people, which was not molested, he was met in front of his hotel by several
white men who administered a severe beating with their fists, and ordered to
catch the first train cut of texas; and not to stop in Texas.

It also appears from the Prees that Governor Hobby, in reply to an
inquiry as to whether efforts were being made to punish the offenders, stated
that Shillady was the only offender and that he had been punished prior to the
receipt of theinquiry; he also stated that the organization could do more
toward the advancement of the colored people by keeping their representatives
out of that State than in any other way.
