Sunday Dec. 2dth 1838.

All of these 24 Hours strong breezes from the
northward and smoaky with a large swell
at 4 A. M. made sail steering by the wind to
the west untill 7 A. M. Tacked ship to the N. & E.
saw a plenty of Fin backs run through them
to the East Tacked ship to the west again.

at 4 P. M. spoke ship [?] [Walgaranton?] of Salem.
masters name not known. 7 whales saw 2 more ships
to the south of us but none whaling

Saw not the spout of a Rig whale this Day the times
look dul and hard a prospect of a long and tedious
cruise. So ends with carrying sail through the night
to the west.

Latitude Obs. 37" 06 South. Longitude per. watch 23" 17 west.

Monday Dec. 3dth 1838.

Commences with fresh breezes from the north
and smoaky with light Rain steering by the wind
to the westward. middle & Latter Hours more
moderate the wind shifted suddenly to the west
tacked ship to the northward.

at 7 P. M. took in sail Heading N. by E

saw nothing this Day water green and barren
sun obscured So Ends

Latitude by rec. 37" 43. South Long. by rec. 25" 09 west.

Tuesday Dec. 4th 1838.

Commences with light breezes from the west steering
by the wind to the northward at 4 A. M. calm
at 5 Do. cloudy and thick with light Rain
at 10 Do. light airs from the south steering north.
Saw 1 Fin Back few or no Birds water Blue
at 6 P. M cloudy with Rain Saw 2 sail steering
to the west.

So ends with carrying sail through the night
to the north.

Latitude Obs. 37" 43 South. Longitude by rec. 25" 00 west.
