Saturday Dec. 15th 1838.

Commences with strong breezes from the northward
and smoaky at Daylight made sail steering by the
wind to the west saw 2 Fin backs.

Middle & Latter Hours strong breezes at 2 P. M. saw 1
Right whale lowed struck and killed took him along
side and commenced cutting the wind increasing
and swells rising took the Throat & Lips of the whale
the Piece tearing off lost the Head Hooked on again
after getting in half of the Body the carcass sinking
bad the Piece tore out again and down went the whale
it now being Dark concluded to let him hang but the chain
parted likewise the Hawser and lost him

So ends this Day.

Latitude Obs. 36" 28. South. Longitude per. watch 25" 23. west.

Sunday, Dec. 16th 1838.

All of these 24 Hours fresh gales from the N. N. W. lying to
heading to the N. & E. untill 7 A. M. tacked ship to the
SW Saw 1 ship Boiling at 5 P. M. tacked to the N. & E.
Saw no whales this Day water green.

So ends.

Monday Dec. 17th 1838.

All of these 24 Hours fresh gales from the north and
smoaky at 7 A. M. set the Top Sails double Reefed
strong to the west Saw 1 Right whale but did chaise
at Meridian tacked ship to the Eastward.

at 7 P. M. took in sail heading to the west

Saw nothing more so ends.

Latitude Obs. 36 22 South. Longitude per. watch 25" 00 west.

Tuesday Dec. 18th 1838.

Com___ces with strong breezes from the north and Hazy steering
to the west at meridian saw 3 whales struck and killed
1. took him alongside and cut him in lost the Head this Day
stowed down 40 bbls of Oil main Hatch starboard aft
middle & Latter Hours more moderate and clear [Picture of a whale spouting blood]

so ends boiling
