Ship France lying in Anchor Island Harbor

Latter Hours the wind hauled to the North at Daylight
Sent a Boat off to make discoveries at 9 A. M. returned
haveing found a passage out to the South Hove short the
Ship tailing on to a point of Rocks bent 3 Towlines together
and run them to the opposite Shore to a Tree warped
the Ship to the edge of the Bank and made Sail the
wind increaseing in squalls parted the Line gave up for
a moderate time payed out chain and took in Sail

So ends this Day.

Wednesday, May 22th, 1839.

Commences with strong breezes from the North attended
with Rain. At 10 P.M. the wind shifted suddenly to
the South with a terrible Howl and pelting of Rain
the Ship now tailing to the North along the Bank
Middle & Latter Hours the same at 10 A. M. Rafted 6
Casks and sent them on shore for water rolled
them over the Bank when filled the Tide fell found
it impossible to roll them back and left them for High
water

So ends.

Thursday, May 23dth, 1839.

Commences with fresh gales with an occasional lull
from the South Sent on shore for the Raft of water
while there took another Boat and went to the North
looking for Harbors & Soundings found but one of the
former and that with the wind to the North which we
named reach Harbor having 50 fathom strong Bottom
2 Cables length from the Rocks. while the 2 Boats were
absent the Ship draged from the Bank and an Eddy
Tide carried her into the Stream fired 3 guns and
the Boat left the Raft on shore before the anchor was
to the Bows the Ship had drifted 3 miles to the North
the other Boat not hearing the report and seeing the
Ship adrift returned put all possible Sail on and
run to the north at 9 P. M. abreast of the outer Head Land
at midnight lost sight of it leaving it far to the East.
middle Hours fresh gales from the South Steering by the wind to the west
Latter Hours more moderate. So ends.

Latitude Obs. 45" 297. South. Longitude per watch 165" 00. East.
