Ship France cruiseing for whales about New Zealand

Friday, July 19th, 1839.

All of these 24 Hours fresh breezes and cloudy
wind W. N. W. lying off & on a Native village 10 miles to
the South of Cape East. at 4 P. M. sent in two Boats to
Trade there being a dangerous Surf on did not Land
but returned with a canoe and four Natives which
we took on board at Daylight sent off two Boats to Trade
likewise the Natives but they showing signs of Hostility
set a waft and the Boats returned and we now make
Sail for the Bay of Islands.

the Natives have a good idea of most all articles that can
be brought for Trade for Keg of Powder of 15 lbs. they will give
3 Small Pigs and Potatoes in proportion.

So ends.

Latitude Obs. 37" 44. South. Longitude per watch 179" 15 East.

Saturday July 20th, 1839.

Commences with fresh breezes from the west and
smoaky Steering by the wind to the N. & E.

at 4 P. M. the wind veered to the North Tacked Ship
to the west at 3 A. M. fresh gales and cloudy tacked to
the N. & E. Carpenters employed in various jobs in the line

So ends.

Latitude by Acc. 37" 15. South. Longitude by Acc. 180" 04 west.

Sunday, July 21th, 1839.

Commences with fresh gales from the North and
cloudy attended with Rain set the Top Sails double
Reefed Steering by the wind to the west.

middle & Latter Hours more moderate the wind veering
to NW Tacked to the North.

So ends.

Latitude Obs. 37" 16. South. Longitude by Chronometer 179" 12 West.

Monday July 22th, 1839.

Commences with moderate gales from the NW Steering
by the wind to the N. & E.

middle the wind hauled in west

Latter Hours from teh South. at 9 P. M. saw a Shoal of
Blackfish killed six and took them in and Steered
off W. N. W. Hands employed in taking off the Blubber.

So ends.

Latitude Obs. 36" 56. South. Longitude by acc. 180" 00 East.
