Ship France cruiseing on the off Shore Ground

Monday, Sept. 23dth, 1839.

First part strong breezes from the N. N. E. and
Squally at 4 A. M. the wind shifted to the North. at 6 Do.
the wind hauled to the South Steered off NW
untill meridian took in Sail and hauled too by
the wind to the west.

Middle & Latter Hours Strong gales and clear. at 6 P. M.
tacked Ship to the Eastward one Ship in sight but
no whales water green.

So ends.

Latitude Obs. 31" 20 South. Longitude by acc. 176" 55. west.

Tuesday, Sept. 24th, 1839.

First part fresh gales from the South at 6 A. M.
made Sail Steering off NW untill 2 P. M. Steered
W. N. W. Middle & Latter Hours more moderate spoke
Barque Tikarone of Bay of Islands no Oil.

at 6 P. M. made Macauleys or Goat Island bearing
SW 40 Miles Dist at 7 Do. took in Sail heading W. S. W.
Saw nothing this Day water green no whales.

So ends.

Wednesday, Sept. 25th, 1839.

All of these 24 Hours moderate breezes from the
Southward and pleasant weather at 5 A. M. made
Sail and Steered off for Sunday Island which
was bearing N. N. W. 15 miles Distant and Goat Island
South 40 miles at meridian sent in two Boats on the
SW Side of the Island for whales saw none and
Landed was told by the Inhabitants that the whales
had not been in the Bay this Season. the Boats then
returned to the Ship and Steered to the N. & E.
carrying Sail through the Night.

Saw Several Fin Backs but no Right whales.

So ends.
