Ship France cruiseing for whales on the off shore

Sunday, Oct. 6th, 1839.

First part Calm and Squally with heavy showers
of Rain. at 9 A. M. saw 4 whales lowered struck
3 killed 2. took them alongside and cut them in
the other whale we lost by a loose Iron cutting off the
Line. Middle & Latter Hours light airs from the
Eastward and pleasant. [Two right whale silhouettes. "Saved" and "50 Bls" is written above the left one. "Saved" and "40 Bls." is written above the right one.]

Sun Obscure 32" 45 South. Longitude by acc. 171" 50 west.

Monday, Oct. 7th, 1839.

All of these 24 Hours fresh gales from the
Eastward and squally made Sail steering
to the North at 1 P. M. Saw 2 Right whales
lowered for them but they were started by the Ship
at 3 Do. spoke Ship John Cockrill of Havre
1 whale. at 4 Do. tacked Ship to the S. & E.
at 6 Do. took in Sail and commenced Boiling

So ends.

Tuesday, Oct. 8th, 1839.

All of these 24 Hours fresh gales from the Eastward
at Daylight made Sail steering by the wind to
the Southward at 7 A. M. Saw 2 Right whales
turn Flukes but Saw them no more at 8 Do. tacked
Ship to the North at 1 P. M. tacked again to the
South saw 3 Ships one of them Boiling.

at 7 P. M. took in Sail heading S. by E.

So ends Boiling.

Latitude Obs. 32" 27 South. Longitude per watch 172" 01 west.

Wednesday, Oct. 9th, 1839.

All of these 24 Hours fresh gales from the Eastward
and cloudy attended with Rain at 5 A. M. made
Sail Steering to the South untill 9 Do. found ourselves
in Blue water steered off NW at 1 P. M. Saw Several
lowered struck and killed 1 took him alongside and lay
by him through the Night. So ends water green. [Silhouette of a right whale with "Saved" and "75 Blls" written above it.]
