Sunday Dec. 8th, 1839.

First part Strong breezes from the west at Daylight
Steered in for the South part of Chatham Island
off which lay a small Reef 12 miles Dist.

at 10 A. M. run the S E. side of the Island down 1 mile
off Shore but Saw no Bays but a plenty of Natives

at 2 P. M. passed the East Point and hauled by the
wind to the N. & W. at 4 Do Saw a nook in the Land
haveing the appearance of the Bay bearing S. by w 20 miles
Dist and the Sisters west 30 miles

So ends carrying Sail through the Night and avouring to
get to the west. Latter Hours light airs.

Monday, Dec. 9th, 1839.

First part light airs and calm at 4 A. M strong
breezes from the Eastward attended with Rain
made all Sail and run down the NW side of the Island
but found no Bays or Harbours hauled by the wind
to the S. & E. at 8 A. M. made the west Reef bearing
SSW the wind increaseing run off to the west of
it Middle Hours strong gales with Rain took
in Sail and set the Spencers heading North

Tuesday, Dec. 10th, 1839

First part strong gales from the Eastward at 4 A. M
the wind more moderate wore Ship to the Eastward
and made Sail at 6 Do. made the Land bearing
E. S. E. run in for the Land passing inside of West
Reef. at 10 Do. saw a Schooner lying in at the
Bay of Wangaroo at 11 Do. in passing the Eastermost Head the
Ship Struck upon a Rock which brought her Bows out
of water 4 feet Hove every Sail hard aback instantly
and made all Sail while getting an Anchor out
astern. 2 [Roolers?] came in the Ship made 2 [Pumps?] and
payed off we then took a Pilot and Beat up the
Bay which was or is a 1/2 mile wide and 3/4 of a mile
Deep and came too in 8 Fathom water Rocky bottom
with our best Bower. middle & Latter Hours more moderate
and pleasant. So ends this Day.
