Tuesday Dec. 17th, 1839.

All of these 24 Hours Strong breezes from the NNE
and fair weather Sent the Starboard watch
on Liberty at Sun set they returned with the exception
of the Carpenter and Nathaniel B. Hills who
have deserted went on shore and employed
50 Natives to catch them.

So ends

Wednesday Dec. 18th, 1839.

First part strong breezes from the NNE and
Squally attended with Rain.

Middle & Latter Hours more moderate and
Cloudy the wind veering to the NW at 10 A M Saw
Ship Erie come to anchor in Vytackey Bay So ends.

Thursday, Dec. 19th, 1839.

First part light airs from the North and foggy
at Daylight onmoored the Ship at 8 P. M got
underweigh for Sea Ship Ann Maria in company
at 9 Do. made the westermost Head of the Island
bearing S. S. E. 10 miles Dist. at 10 Do. stowed the anchors
unbent the Cables and coiled them below.

Middle Hours light airs.

Latter the wind hauled to the west and clear
at 7 P. M. the South part of Chatham Island bore
NE by N. 18 miles Dist. Pitts Island South part E by N
15 Dist. so ends carrying Sail through the Night
Steering South

Wangaroa Bay is on the SW Side of Chatham
Island and is a Quarter of a mile wide and
3/4 of a mile Deep in a NW course has 7 Fathom water
Rockky Bottom in its centre and gradually deepens
to 18 Fathoms. Rocky bottom one Cables length out side
of the Bay inside there is larged quantities of Kelp but
no danger in vessels beating in by keeping 2 Cables length
from the Shore
