Ship France cruiseing for whales.

Friday, Dec. 20th, 1839.

First & middle part fresh gales from the SW. and
Squally Steering by the wind to the South
untill 1 P. M. took in Sail.

at 6 Do. Saw a Barque Ship to the Eastward heading
to the South.

Latter Hours more moderate and clear.

Saw nothing remarkable this Day.

So ends.

Latitude Obs. 45" 40 South. Longitude by acc. 176" 45 west.

Saturday, Dec. 21th, 1839.

First part strong breezes from the west and Squally
Steering by the wind to the Southward untill 2 P. M
the wind hauling to the South tacked Ship to the
west at 3 P. M. Spoke Ship Mercury of Stonington
Ship Ann Maria in company.

Latter Hours strong gales took in Sail heading W. by N.
Saw many Fin backs but no Right whales.

So ends.

Latitude by acc. 46" 20 South. Longitude by acc. 176" 59 west.

Sunday, Dec. 22th, 1839.

All of these 24 Hours fresh gales from the South and
Squally at Daylight made Sail Steering by the wind
to the west at 10 P. M Saw 2 Right whales chaised
them but without Success at 3 A. M. tacked Ship
to the Eastward Saw no more Right whales but several
Fin Backs water Blue at 8 A. M. took in Sail.

So ends.

Latitude Obs. 45" 47 South. Longitude per watch 177" 39 west.

Monday, Dec. 23dth, 1839.

First part strong breezes from the South and Cloudy
made Sail Steering by the wind to the west.
at 10 P. M. Sounded the Pumps found the Ship had
6 feet of water in the Hold turned all Hands to at 1 1/2 oclock
freed the Ship and broke out the Fore Peak on the
Larboard Side found a running Stream of water appearing
to run through the garboard strak cut away the ceiling
