Thursday Jan. 16th, 1840.

First part fresh gales from the Eastward and clear
made Sail and steered off NW by W.

Middle & Latter Hours more moderate and Cloudy
steered W. N. W this Day Cooppered and filled
up the Sperm Oil.

Latitude Obs. 34" 35. South. Longitude per watch 152" 38. East

Friday, Jan. 17th, 1840

All of these 24 Hours light airs from the Eastward
and clear steering W. N. W.

Ships Howerly Leak 1100 Strokes.

So ends.

Saturday, Jan. 18th, 1840.

First part light from the Eastward Steering NW. by W.
at 3 A. M the wind hauled to the North took in
the Steering Sail and Steered by the wind to N. & W
at 4 A. M. made the light on the South Head of
Sidney Harbor bearing NW 18 miles Dist

at 10 A. M. beat the Cables

Middle Hours the wind veering to NW tacked Ship
to the NE. Latter Hours Strong breezes from the North
with a large swell at 6 P. M Saw a Sloop of war
lying at anchor under the North Head.

Ships Howerly Leak 1100 Strokes. So ends Beating to the North
and keeping hold of the light
