and Smoaky made Sail Steering to the East untill
11 A. M. tacked to the west. at 5 A M. took in Sail
heading to the west

So ends.

Latitude Obs. 44" 23. South. Longitude per watch 175" 00 East.

Thursday April 30th 1840.

First fresh breezes from the North made Sail Steering
to by the wind to the Eastward at 8 A. M. Spoke
Ship James Maury of Salem 2800 blls

middle Hours light airs. Latter the wind hauled
to the Southward.

So ends.

Latitude Obs. 44" 48. South. Longitude by acc. 175" 30 East.

Friday May 1th, 1840.

First & Middle part fresh gales wind S by E. Steering
by the wind to the Eastward.

Latter Hours more moderate saw 2 Ships Steering
to the Eastward.

So ends.

Latitude Obs. 44" 47. South. Longitude by acc. 176" 25 East.

Saturday May 2th 1840.

First part light airs from the South.

Middle & Latter Hours the wind hauled to the
west Steered East untill 2 P. M. Steered NE.
saw large quantities of whale Birds. water Blue

Latitude Obs. 45" 14. South. Longitude per watch 178" 10 East.

Saturday May 3dth, 1840.

First part light airs from the west and cloudy
at 4 A. M. the wind hauled to the North from
that to NE. made Sail Steering W by N. Middle Hours
Strong gales split the main Top Sail & main Top
gallant Sail likewise stove the waist & Starboard
Quarter Boats.

Latter Hours the wind increaseing and hauling to the
Southward took in Sail and set the main Spencer

So ends.

Latitude Obs. 45" 00. South. Longitude by acc. 177" 00 East.
