& Dear Friend,

The day of the laying of the
Corner Stone of the University of the South
is fixed at a time which renders my
being there impossible. The Board of
Missions at New Haven (Greek Mission
to be discussed) & the Board of Trustees
of Gen. Theol. Seminary here in New
York, meet so near that date, that
I am tied hand & foot. I am very{underlined}
sorry, -- more so than I can well ex-
press. Had the day been any time
from the 2'd week -- July to the 2'd
week -- Sept. I should certainly
have been there. As it is I must
put up with my disappointment the
best way I can, & hope for better
