April 7th 1856. On Rio
[scribblings] Memo
Wedding day - hurra

At 5 Sighted fires and got steam
up, weighed and went across to Coal Island to complete
our fuel : had great fun ashore, and had a pair of
trowsers burnt off me - At dusk we got all the
requisite coals on board, and made a start once
again to the Rio Side, where we arrived at gun
fire.

April 8th At daylight saw a large Steamer
coming in and soon made her out to be the
English Mail - At 8.30 got our letters one from
Sissy, Mother & Bill. Went on board Madagascar.
Admiral went to Fantome and inspected her.
In the evening there was a general reading of letters &c

April 9th An order to prepare for sea again, went
ashore in the forenoon for breakfast, not being
able to get any on board : met Captn Sawson of
the Ocean Monarch, and my old friend Mr Callander,
Consul of St Catherines, on his way to Scotland.
At 3 went on board, but there was no dinner
for me - At 6 we weighed, after receiving the
Indefatigables Mail &c, and steamed out of the
Harbor.

April 10th A nasty drizzling morning, with a
light breeze of wind, and a heavy swell running.
At 8 saw the Indefatigable and made our Pendants
to her : 9.30 stopped alongside, when the Commdr
went on board with the mail and received order
to proceed to Illyo Grande, the Frigate to accompany
us - Employed writing to L but in a very
bad temper, after re-reading her letter : began one to
