7. In the Department of Geology, Mr. R. A. Edwards has
resigned and Mr. Chilton Prouty is recommended as a part-
time Instructor for one year at $750 net, the exact salary
vacated by Mr. Edwards. Mr. Prouty holds the M. A. Degree
from the Missouri School of Mines.

8. In the Department of Zoology approval is requested
to grant Professor C. D. Beers a leave of absence without
pay for the winter and spring quarters of the year begin-
ning September 1, 1938. This is a study leave.

In this same Department, Dr. H. V. Wilson has requested to
be relieved of one-third time and salary in order to re-
duce his schedule. We recommend that he be requested to
continue in active service on this two-thirds basis for the
ensuing year.

9. In the Department of Olassica we announce the death
of William Stanley Bernard, Professor of Greek. An appro-
priate memorial expression to Professor Bernard is being
drafted by a committee of the faculty. We have at present
no recommendation ready as to replacement.

10. The following report is submitted with the approval
of the Division of Public Health, the School of Medicine,
and you yourself in consultation with me and the Advisory
Committee. It constitutes a Point of cooperation between
the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina
and the School of Medicine at Duke University.

"The faculty of the School of Medicine wish to recom-
mend the appointment of Dr. Harold W. Brown as Professor
of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at Duke Univeristy.
Dr. Brown is ay present Professor of Preventive medicine
and Public Health at the University of North Carolina at
an annual salary of $4,500, which is to be increased this
year to $5,000. It is recommended that if Dr. Brown is
appointed at Duke, he retain his title and Salary at the
University of North Carolina and that $5,000 be paid
annually by Duke University to the University of North
Carolina, for the Division of Public Health, starting
October 1, 1938".

11. To approve proposition of the Highway Commission, the
town of Chapel Hill and the University to widen the Pittsboro
Highway east of the Carolina Inn, to construct an underpass
and a sidewalk. Funds for this are made available by the
Highway Commission and the Town of Chapel Hill.

On motion of Mr. Whedbee, seconded by Mr. Tucker, the recom-
mendations in the above report were approved with the proviso that
the approval of the recommendation of the highway widening be subject
to approval of the donor of the Carolina Inn.

1. Promotions:

a. Miss Christine White, Department of Physical Education,
from Instructor to Assistant Professor. Salary
increased from $1900 to $2000.

b. George P. Wilson, Department of English, from
Associate Professor to Professor. No change in salary.

c. Dr. Lyda Gordon Shivers, Department of Sociology,
from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor.
Increase from $2400 to $2500.
