of the Executive Committee. President Gray outlined briefly Dr. Purks'
experience and stated "he has virtually every kind of experience in institu-
tions of higher learning that it is possible to have, including recent service
with a large Foundation in this country. We very strongly recommend him.
I don't think we could have found a man better qualified for this position
by reason of his background, his knowledge of the South, his knowledge of the
problems of North Carolina, his knowledge and experience in education."

Mr. Riddle moved that Dr. Purks be elected as Provost of the
Consolidated University, the motion was duly seconded, the matter was put to
a vote and unanimously carried.

RESOLUTION IN APPRECIATION OF THE SERVICES OF RETIRING MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.

Mr. Victor Bryant, Chairman of the Special Committee appointed to draft
a suitable resolution expressing the appreciation of the Board for the
services and abilities of retiring members, read the following resolution
which was unanimously adopted:

RESOLUTION

The undersigned Committee appointed by resolution of the Board of
Trustees at its June, 1953 meeting to draft suitable resolutions for the
retiring members of the Board, respectfully presents the following Resolution:

WHEREAS, the General Assembly of 1953 in its difficult duty of naming
members for the Board of Trustees of the Consolidated University of North
Carolina retired, the following members of the Board, all of whom had given
unselfishly of their time and abilities toward the advancement and betterment
of the University of North Carolina, and some of whom had served for many years
with conspicuous ability on both regular and special committees of the
University's Board of Trustees; and

WHEREAS, the Board wishes to recognize the outstanding service of the
retiring members of the Board, and to acknowledge with regret the loss of their
experience and ability:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Trustees of the
University of North Carolina that the Board go on record as acknowledging its
appreciation for the outstanding services performed by the fourteen retiring
members, and further expressing its gratitude as well as that of the State for
the able manner in which said members over the years have discharged their
duties and administered their trusts as members of this Board.

RESOLVED FURTHER that this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the
Board of Trustees, and that the Honorable William B. Umstead, Governor of the
State, be requested to forward a copy of the same to all of the retiring
members of the Board who are listed as follows:
