My Dear Doctor
I have your letter of
August 8th and [notice?] particularly what
you say about Mr Doyle sending a check
for $150 as a compensation for his sons
tuition.
It is very kind and considerate
in Mr Doyle to donate this money but I
do not think we ought to accept it
as compensation for tuition. Our idea
is -if you remember- that while the
Institution is to be open to all without
regard to their fortunes nothing must
occur that might humiliate students
of small means. I want the students
to feel not only that the institution is
free but that they have a right to
avoid themselves of it.
IF a gentleman like Mr. Doyle
chooses to make a donation to the Library
or any other Department by which the
students hall be benefited we
ought to accept the donation with
gratitude but I do not want it to
