Mr. Obelson enlisted in the Regular Army less than three months after the US entered WWI. He underwent initial training at Fort Thomas, Kentucky, earning a rating as a waggoner (equivalent to a private first class) before being assigned to the 3d Division. He deployed with the division to France in March, 1918, and spent the war assigned to the Regimental Support Company, 7th Infantry Regiment. He remained in Europe as part of the Army of Occupation in Coblenz, returning home for discharge on 28 August 1919.
