Dear Madam,

It is with profound sor-
row, but not with surprise that I no-
tice by the New York papers of yesterday
an announcement of the death of
Senator Stanford, a great loss to the
Country at large, but a greater loss
to you his wife, who have been call-
ed upon to triumph with him
in his singular prosperity, and in
his sorrows. Though not intimately
