our mutual friend Mr. Lincoln
whom I saw the day he left Spring-
field for Washington - whose remains
I received at the State Capital of
the Old Court House in Springfield
and followed to the grave.

I also had the pleasure of meeting
in company with Senator Edmond
of Vermont, and others, at the house
of Senator Miller of California when
present to solemnize the marriage
of my son Lieut Clover to his daugter [sic]
Dora. My son is now absent on leave
in California, and I trust may be al[lowed]
to be present at the funeral of Senat[or]
Stanford with his wife, both of whom
I know esteemed him with deep af
-fection, and to whom they were un
-der obligations.
