wash it clean with soap and warm watter, have it perfectly clean, then stretch the skin and tack it on a plank rub a hand full of salt on it while it is wet then put on pulverised alum one pound for a large skin half pound for a lamb skin let it lie that way for four or five days before it gets drye take a whet stone or smoothe stone and rub and dress the flesh side several days 1st or 2nd a day until it is smoothe and soft & drye the Alum may be put on at several different times as fast as it will soak into the skin

It should be rubed while it is getting drye until perfectly drue take care not to rub through if the skin dryes faster than the 4 or 5 days use the whetstone sooner

Aunt Lucy Died
July 22 1861 old Aunty Lucy died of dropesy sick a long time buried Francess buring ground. She was faithful servant all the family white & black was greatly attached to her. She had the care of the family White & black for Forty years She died much regretted.

Monday Sept 7th 1861
Colic got to my Saddle horse and crippled ^him up verry bad All flesh wounds, but he is verry much hurt will not be fit for service for 2 or 3 weeks
