Nimrod Porter Papers
Farmer and sheriff in Maury County, Tenn. Diary and other records of Nimrod Porter. The diary, 1861–1871, records daily life during the Civil War and Reconstruction; weather; farm and business activities; operations of Union and Confederate armies and guerillas in Maury County and vicinity; news of neighbors in the Confederate Army; the federal occupation of Tennessee; behavior of slaves and freedmen; and feelings and comments about events. There are also scattered household and farm notes, receipts, and accounts, 1833–1843 and 1869–1870; and Porter's brief pungent descriptions of his campaigns for sheriff, 1819–1843.
