[hand pointing] May 15 We recd the news that the Fedrels had taken Jackson Miss & that port Hudson were evacuated by our troops May the 19th 1863. Also reported that the Fedrels were evacuated Jackson & many of them taken prisoners about the 14th May

May 20 [hand pointing] Recd news of James I. Croffords death on the 15. Feby.

May 20 Col Fensons Regt returned to Miss Stayed all night Wed 20 in Worfields Wood lott, left the next day All the Miss left for the South.

May 20 Genl Forrests Brigade returned from the Tennessee river where they captured many prisoners, & crossed to Spring Hill

May 20 I wrote a letter to Martha by Capt Wheeler
“ Capt Wheeler stayed one day & 2 nights with us on his rode to Miss May 21

1863 May The Southern Soldiers stole Wm Js black Mule out of the lott Sunday 17 May found it on Monday evening in Town with the Soldiers & braught it home

1863 May 21 William sold his bay horse to Col. Wm Maxwell May 21 for $700.00

22 William went to Giles

22 I swapt horses with Mr. Joiner soldier of the 4 Mississippi (Mats hors) & got $50. Conderate money to boot.

22 The soldiers with Waggons drove up to my house to press our corn they went off & did not do it. Considerable altercation the 3d Ten Browns Regt. on there return to Miss

22 Finished the Woods lott fence on the rode 7 rails high 22 May.
