Greate commotion amongst our Citizens them and all the [hand pointing] Soldiers leaving for the South expecting the Feds here every hour all going that can git off, greate distress and alarm amongst the Citizens men & women this excitement has been ever since Shelbyville was evacuated on the 27 & 28th June.

1863 July 2nd Thursday [hand pointing] The news from Town this morning is verry discouraging they were fighting yesterday at Tulahoma Col Stars mortally wounded, considerable slaughter. Our troops driven back. The Canons were heard last night South & East, until a late hour. Clear night & the Moon in the full, the fighting last night appeared & little East of Pulaski & probably near too it. No news from Vicksburg

[hand pointing] Fr 3rd News, that the Southern troops have fallen back from Tulahoma (gone South & East)

[hand pointing] 4. Men passed my brickyard going North about 4 oclock in the evening quite intelagent they had the appearance of being verry suspicious characters, at least I think so (from the North)

Sat 4 William left, went above Bigbyville yesterday did not return last night returned to day

4 [hand pointing] At night our blacks had a little party ^{at night} all went off verry well No news from Vicksburg
