1863 Fr 10) The sun rose this morning through a cloud of mist & smoke & so continued all day it was a red yellow collour did not shine upon the earth to be [precevable?], tho it was plain and visible to the naked eye all day, it had a verry uncommon appearance There was no clouds in appearance between us & the sun all day to prevent its being seen, a dead calm all day & night -

Sat 11 This morning before sun up it was a little smokey but as the sun rose a verry greate cloud of smok & Fog seemed to darken the whole earth No sun to be seen a verry dark day indeed. About 12 oclock the sun could be seen verry dimly through the dence Smoke & fog but towards night it disappeared Verry dark and a dead calm
[hand pointing] The Fedral papers say they have got Vicksburg Southerns deny it (on 4th July)

1863 Sun 12 July) This morning is very dark & lgoomy, no sun, heavy Fog & Mist, a perfect calm. Commenced raining in the evening rained all night, verry hard. The ground is in a flood of [hand pointing] Watter No important news from the seat of War more than has been reported & rumored.
