Mon 13 This morning it is raining a study & heavy rain a dark & gloomy morning, quit raining about 12 oclock Cleared off the sun shone dimly through a cloud of Smoke until night ( the 13th Continued)

Mon 13th The Federals came into Columbia about 2 oclock P.M.
[hand pointing] Surrounded many soldiers & took them prisoners took many horses mules &c . Greate alarm & running amongst our Soldiers & Citizens ( 2 Regts of Cavalry )

1863 July 13 Continued) how has this hapened that no one knew the Federals was near until they were in & around the Town shooting & driving all around the Town. It seems there has been a screw loose all around some where Why is this so , have our people become indolent & lost their energy or what is the matter.

Ju 14 Verry dark & misty & rained a little until 12 oclock the ^{after part of the} day was a little more bright & the sun did shine but dimly.
[hand pointing] The Fedrals left Columbia about 12 oclock to day, after taking all the horses (& some negores) they could git They left on the rode to Mt. Pleasant
Mat got Williams Mule saddle & bridle that he left in Town yesterday & brought it home this evening
The boys went to plowing in the evening in fine humor had some fun cutting down a tree & ketching a Raccoon
