1863 Tu 18 Augt) [hand pointing] My son Thomas came togather with Willa & Hamon Webster & stayed all night last night
No particular news of the last night. The sun arose clear & beautiful this morning.
It is reported & believed tho I doubt it that France & Spain has acknoweldged the independence of the Southern Confederacy. It it is so I think it likely that we will have peace before verry long, as the leaders that braught on the war cannot be treated as trators & rebles after the Southern Confederacy has been acknowledged by other governments. I believe the leaders would have stopt the war before this only they were afraid of there heads, now since it has been acknowledged & recognized by other powers, I have but little doubt if that is the case & I hope it is. A stop will be put
