They have left these parts in the direction of Clifton about 4000 Mounted Men I stayed at home W J Porter was here for dinner

1864 Mon 4th Jany) It commenced raining at Midnight & this morning it is raining and sleating. The ground is covered with a sheet of Ice, the weather is much moderated. Tues 5 This morning is verry cold the Wind is from the North the ground is froze verry hard. The two Wilchere boys with Wm Due came last night after supper the youngest not verry well. They are from Nashville We are trying to git Wood & food cant do anything only keep fires I hear that Genl Smith forces are gone on towards Clifton to encounter with Genl Forrests forces just across the Tennessee river. Since night it has become entirely clear & verry cold every thing froze up. I stayed home all day
